Our quest at Borowski Race Engines, Inc. is to produce best-in-class engines. That means our products need to embody the best combination of form, function, reliability and value. They need to look great, perform better, survive in a tough world and do so at a price that makes sense.
Back in 2013, we were able to buy 3 of Dart's first batch of 25 LS Next blocks. We put Whipple superchargers on all of them. The builds were picked up in Engine Labs Magazine and our 427ci LS with a 2.9L Whipple became our best selling engine.
A lot has changed since then. The aftermarket industry has introduced newer and better products. We have added a state-of-the-art 5-axis CNC mill which has allowed us to evolve our cylinder head port and combustion chamber designs. Our diamond CNC hone allows us to achieve incredibly precise block finishing. Perhaps just as importantly, we have learned a lot over the years as to what works best in these engines. The net result is that we are now making more power and producing an overall better product. The video below summarizes our current recipe for our Whipple supercharged line of LS engines.
While the video demo'd the 2.9L build, we use a common architecture across all our Whipple LS builds (2.9, 4.0, 4.5 side-feed, 4.5 front-feed) and other power adder types in the same performance range. We maintain an inventory of all the key parts and can therefore manufacture any specific engine to the customers requirements with a short lead time. Engine Machining: Our shop is all CNC. The precision of our block dimensions and surface finishes significantly enhancez the performance of our engines. The CNCs we use for head work (Rottler EM69P 5-axis and Newen Contour) produce designs and finishes that cannot be duplicated with manual equipment. Click here for Virtual Shop Tour.
Experience: We have built a lot of these engines over the years and learned along the way. While parts changes may be clearly visible, the secret sauce of cam design, tunes, port design, etc. are every bit as important in evolving to our current level of performance.
Engine Block: Since publishing Dart-GM LS Block Comparison, we have standardized on the Dart LS Next SHP Pro block. Its relatively small up-charge over the base SHP version brings a big jump in strength due to its higher nickle content.
Center counter-weighted crankshaft: As stated in the video above, we have found that center counterweights in the crankshaft are a major benefit. Check out this video to see what Brook Piper of Callie Performance had to say about them.

Valve Train: The Whipple engines we build use COMP Cam's BSR shaft rockers, short-travel hydraulic lifters and camshaft for exceptional valve train stability, particularly at high RPM.
Electronics: The importance of the tune and engine management system cannot be overstated. Our engine dyno has a dedicated Holley Dominator, Recently however, Holley introduced their less expensive Terminator X line which works just as well on our Whipple supercharged engines. We have found that we can gain significant power by adjusting our tunes to utilize the higher electrical capacity of the FAST XR series coil packs.
Post-Sale Support: The ECU that comes with your engine will have the tune on it from its dyno session. These units are self-learning so that no further tuning should be required. They are truly plug and play. Turbo installs typically require additional tuning after installation. In either case however, we can provide a laptop with pre-loaded software that will allow us to tune remotely.
