- Brodix Aluminum Big Block Chevy (BBC) Block
Description:
Part Kit Included
The Big Block Chevy (BBC) has delivered big horsepower for decades with a motto of "there is no replacement for displacement". Their downsides have been weight and cooling. Excessive weight in the nose of a car can significantly degrade its braking, steering and rear wheel traction. Horsepower and heat generation are proportional to each other. The weight and relatively poor heat conductivity of cast iron make heat removal progressively more challenging as horsepower increases. Acceleration also suffers as it is inversely proportional to mass.
These issues can be addressed by switching from iron to aluminum. Besides being much lighter, aluminum conducts heat about three times better than cast iron. The downsides of cast aluminum versus cast iron are cost and strength. Cost is what it is. Strength can be mitigated through design features along with options such as HIP processing (more info below) and partial or complete filling of the water jackets.
The Brodix aluminum BBC block is cast from virgin A-356 as a direct replacement for cast iron BBC blocks. Thanks to having their own US foundry, these blocks have a wide range of available options and can be delivered with reasonable and reliable lead times which are now about eight weeks. We have been using these blocks for years and they've been working great. Check out the blown Big Block in this video:
Here is a partial list of features and specifications:

- Small bore sleeves available
- Additional head lugs in deck area (head studs available from Brodix)
- Plug kit provided
- Cam bearings sold separately
The block in this photoset has been HIP treated (hot isostatic pressing) as indicated by an embossing on its front face. HIP treatment greatly improves the properties of aluminum castings just as forging does with iron castings. We recommended HIP treatment for high horsepower applications. Bob Williams of All Pro Cylinder Heads explains HIP'ing in the video below:
The price indicated here is for the standard cam BB-2000A block with a 4.5000" bore and either a 9.800 or 10.200" deck height. The Brodix parts kit (cam bearings, oil restrictors, head studs) is included. We offer this block either as-is from Brodix or fully CNC machined at our shop with available options such as top fuel hoops. Shipping costs are charged separately.
Please call for pricing on any of the wide range of options. 815-725-2727
