- FAST Air-to-Water Intercooler for LSXHR Intake Manifold
Description:
If you plan to run boost with gasoline, you need to be thinking about lowering your inlet air temps. That means intercooling. The two generic types are air-to-air and air-to-water. Both can work. Air-to-water types are generally more self-contained and therefore require less fabrication work. Available underhood space and vertical clearance are factors that may favor one type over the other. Air-to-water systems enable the running of refrigerated or iced coolant for enhanced cooling. Air-to-water systems are built into Whipple superchargers and we have used a lot of 417 Motorsports intercoolers sandwiched inside Holley intakes (see videos down below).
FAST was teasing this LSXHR air-to-water intake manifold/intercooler combo at PRI 2023. They claimed it was more efficient at heat transfer than other competitive products. Their testing on a 1,350hp/20psi turbocharged LSX engine showed a 198-degree/F drop in temperature and less than 1psi loss across the intercooler. The package is rated to hold 35 psi.
We have used a lot of their LSXHR intake manifolds with great success. Being a polymer intake, it is lightweight and not subject to heat soak. Our GM (Tim Zapp in photos) was hounding FAST for most of 2024 and one finally arrived in September. One important item to note is that this combination requires special short stacks. The standard ones will not fit. FAST said that it would also work with no stacks.
This new intercooler now allows us to use the proven LSXHR intake manifold in a broader range of end use applications. It will crown the D1-X ProCharged, 370ci LS that we are providing to Maxima Racing Oils for their PRI 2024 booth. That engine build is now underway using the short stacks.
The intercooler can be ordered as a stand-alone or as a complete combination with the short stacks and fuel rails included.
