We here at Borowski Race Engines, Inc are big fans of Callies cranks and rods for a lot of reasons. Performance is always part of the equation but durability is right up there. As we see it, price is less important than performance and durability since if it either doesn't work or wrecks your engine, it was a bad deal. Low cost materials or parts may be okay in low performance engines coming from the OEMs. If you want really big power, low-end parts have no business in high performance builds such as whatever you are thinking about right now.
Callies introduced the major performance upgrade of center counterweighting several years ago. The additional properly-placed counterweights substantially stiffen the crank to prevent flexing and substantially reduce harmonic vibration. Together, these two effects increase both rotating assembly longevity and horsepower. We now use Callies center counterweighted cranks for all LS/LT engines from 700 hp N/A daily drivers to all-out 4,500 hp race engines.
Callies just introduced their Apex line to bridge the price and performance gap between their Compstar (Chinese made) and Magnum (Made in USA) lines. The Apex cranks feature European Magnum-design forgings that are finished in China. Callies rates them to a minimum of 2,500 hp.
At this time, only the 4.000 inch stoke length is available. Both the LS & LT variants can be ordered with either wet or dry sump post lengths. We are switching our standard recipes from Magnum to Apex as the design is identical and the price difference is well over $1,000.
