Dart SHP Short Block - Callies Magnum CCW Crank, 1/2" Head Studs Included
Type: Engine Packages
Vendor: Borowski Race Engines
Description:
This is the short block set we use for most of our builds north of 1,500 hp. John McGhee from Cutaway Racing was with us at PRI 2023. Listen to him explain why he likes this build so much and the derivative long block topped with our All Pro CNC ported heads:
- Dart SHP Block - 4.125" bore standard, 4.000" bore available
- main bolts upgraded to P1 main studs
- block is machined for 1/2" head studs
- Callies' Fully Counterweighted (CCW) Magnum Crankshaft
- Calico Coated Rod and Main Bearings
- Callies Ultra Connecting Rods - H-Beam or I-Beam Enforcer
- Diamond R-Series 2,000HP Rated Pistons
- .225 Wall Wrist Pin
- Available with Either 15 Degree (LS3) or 12 Degree (LS7) Valve Reliefs
- P1 Manufacturing 1/2" head stud kit for Dart SHP block
The engine block is the foundation any build. The Dart LS Next design is both solid and user friendly. No one has been using them longer than us. Dart's late founder, Richard Maskin, personally presented us with Serial #0002. (Dart cut up #0001 for QC checks).
SHP Line Features
- Full side skirts to accommodate OE oil pans
- Accepts LS style Oil filters
- Retains all factory bolt hole locations
LS Next Features
Retains all of the LS Next designs features not found in competing blocks including but not limited to:
- Longer cylinder sleeves,
- Priority main oiling
- 4 bolt splayed main saddle structural
The center counterweighted Magnum crank has a 4.000" stroke and is made from 4340 Timken alloy. The center counterweights are a major upgrade as they increase the cranks stiffness by about 25% while reducing harmonics. The net result is less stress on the main bearings and longer engine life. Watch the video below to learn more.
The Callies rods are made from extremely clean Timken 4330 steel alloy. You may choose from the options of H-Beam or I-Beam Enforcer rods. Callies crank and rods are forged in Trenton, Michigan, and manufactured 100% in Callies' Fostoria, Ohio facility. Here is Callies' Brook Piper again to explain the differences between the available rods.
Topping off the rotating assembly are Diamond's Race Series pistons which are machined with their newest and most precise CNCs in Clinton Michigan. Among their features :
- 3D milling on piston crowns for ready to install finish
- Valve pockets designed to work with most aftermarket cylinder heads
- Offset pins for quiet operation
- Moly skirt coating for friction loss and skirt wear protection
- Side gas ports for better ring seal
- 2618 material for High HP-NOS-Boost applications
- You can select either the LS3 or LS7 piston design. Dish-type is standard but there are a wide range of options.
Calico-coated Clevite bearings are standard.
Our P1 stud upgrades are critical for holding up under boost. We upgrade all our engine builds to main studs if not already so equipped. A key failure mode for boosted engines is having the cylinder heads lift from the block. These blocks are a 6-bolt, 7/16" design which greatly mitigates this issue relative to 4-bolt, 7/16" heads. We put the issue to bed by further upgrading to P1 Manufacturing's 1/2" S220 head studs. As can be seen in this blog (Head Stud Options in Boosted Applications), the larger diameter and higher tensile strength steel provide 58% more slamping force that standard 7/16" 190K-tensile head studs. The net result of more, bigger and better head studs will kepp your cylinder heads locked down.
The skill of the people who finish-machine and assemble your short block is just as important as the parts and design and we've got some of the best around. Further, BOROWSKI RACE ENGINES, INC. boasts state-of-the-art CNC machining equipment which empowers our staff to build the best engines available. This was recognized with our being named Race Engine Builder of the Year by Engine Builder Magazine.
The machining and assembly of your short block is as important as the parts selection. As you'll see in the photo, we have the best equipment available. Honing is a critical machining process as it determines final dimensions and surface finish. Please watch the video to see how we handle honing. We're confident that's how you'll want your block honed after watching.
